Minecraft already has the distinction of being the best-selling video game of all time. Today, he adds even more to that special feather by announcing that he has sold a staggering 300 million copies.

“As the 15th anniversary approaches, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks,” said Helen Chiang, Director of Mojang Studios, in a press release.

The new stage was announced during Minecraft Live 2023, one Minecraft live streaming event that shares news and updates from the community and features an interesting voting event where players can vote for which new creature should be added to the game. This year you have a choice of crab, an armadillo and a penguin. Personally, I voted for the penguin because he’s cute.

Three hundred million copies of Minecraft is nothing to sneeze at, eclipsing the sales of almost every other entertainment outlet since we started tracking. To put things into perspective, Thriller, the best-selling album of all time, has sold approximately 70 million copies. The best-selling console, the PS2, has sold approximately 155 million units. Even the second best-selling video game of all time, Grand Theft Auto Vdon’t even come close Minecraft’s figures, reaching 185 million reported sales. Minecraft is in a class of its own and will probably stay there for a very long time – or at least until Half-Life 3 spell.
